Is your restaurant Gen Z ready?

Curious about what Gen Z values most when dining out? We recently had the pleasure of chatting with Kayla, a passionate foodie from Adelaide, to get the scoop on what this generation looks for in restaurants and cafes. Here’s what we learned from Kayla about her dining preferences and how you can tailor your establishment to meet these expectations.

1. Digital Engagement and Social Media

What Kayla Shared: Kayla emphasised that social media plays a crucial role in her dining decisions. She discovers new spots through Instagram and TikTok and loves sharing her experiences online.

How to Connect:

  • Be Social Media Savvy: Keep an active and engaging presence on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat. Post visually appealing content that resonates with the Gen Z vibe.

  • Encourage User-Generated Content: Create Instagrammable moments in your restaurant that invite customers to share their experiences. Running social media contests can also boost engagement.

  • Collaborate with Influencers: Partner with local influencers who appeal to Gen Z to extend your reach and build credibility. She mentioned how most of their dining choices come from Freekyfeeds or Raylee Cooper.

2. Authenticity and Transparency

What Kayla Shared: Authenticity is key for Kayla. She values restaurants that are genuine and transparent about their practices and that are involved in social and environmental causes.

How to Show Authenticity:

  • Be Transparent: Share details about your sourcing, preparation methods, and any sustainable practices you follow. This builds trust and aligns with her values.

  • Genuine Branding: Ensure your brand messaging reflects your true values. Avoid overly polished marketing and focus on real, relatable content.

  • Engage Meaningfully: Respond to feedback and participate in conversations about issues that matter to your audience.

3. Customisation and Unique Experiences

What Kayla Shared: Customisation and unique dining experiences are high on Kayla’s list. She enjoys having options to personalise her meals and appreciates restaurants that offer something out of the ordinary.

How to Deliver:

  • Offer Customisable Menus: Provide options like build-your-own bowls or customisable burgers to cater to diverse tastes and dietary preferences.

  • Create Interactive Experiences: Incorporate interactive elements such as DIY food stations or cooking classes to make dining more engaging and memorable.

  • Design Memorable Moments: Focus on creating distinctive, photo-worthy experiences that encourage social sharing and leave a lasting impression.
